Katarina G, the founding member of Gypsy Fever, grew up in a small village in Vojvodina (ex-Yugoslavia), an area which has been swaying to the heterophonic heat of the local Gypsy-Folk musicians for generations. There, as the old saying goes, music is used to ‘beat sorrow into celebration’ ("udri brigu na veselje"). Though born of their sorrows, the celebratory nature of the traditional folk music defies the difficult and marginal existence of the war-torn country, a country that now exists only in its beautiful music. After the death of her country, and with this music in her blood, Katarina arrived in London, found musical comrades from Slovakia, Italy and the UK and so began the twisting into existence of Gypsy Fever.
Since then, Gypsy Fever has been enchanting audiences up and down the UK creating music that spins a web of intricate and unrelenting Gypsy magic. They are on their way to being regulars on the UK festival scene, having already played at Bestival, Boomtown and Secret Garden Party.
Gypsy Fever create an exciting fusion of ethno roots from ex-Yugoslavia with Gypsy Jazz, and Folk-Rock.
Combining the rhythms of Serbian weddings with the street-music of the Eastern Europe, Gypsy Fever take people on an exotic musical journey that stirs nomadic souls and gets everyone’s feet dancing!
“They can ignite any dance floor, usually leaving it reeling, breathless and sweaty – before the opening notes of another big hitter reaches round you like the embrace of an old friend.” - John Noblet, Birmingham Review
